Hope y'all enjoyed that Amazon Stream of the 49ers "game," as some
would call it. I think AM radio sufficiently captured the "magic."
I'm not sure whether magician Shanahan caused all hope to disappear, but he better find a rabbit in a hat real soon or the fans will also disappear.

On the subject of photos
Wha? No surfing dogs? Red cars instead? Oh well, the other photos were incredible. The most perfect was J.P. Sears, I thought. And there were many others that gradually helped me understand one of the reasons why people enjoy watching sports: the situations are unpredictable and dynamic. Of course, with my slow brain, I can most appreciate this quality when it's preserved in the frozen river of photography.

Also thought Monkman made an excellent point.

A Fishing Wonderland

Venice, LA --
In Search of Forrest Gump

by Andy Dolich

Venice, Louisiana is referred to as the “Fishing Capital of the World.”

That is a bold statement considering that 71% of the earth’s surface is water. Having fished a small percentage of the world’s oceans you won’t get an argument from me that Venice can compete with any place that has fighting finny creatures swimming under its surface.

The “Gateway to the Gulf” is the southernmost piece of land in Louisiana sticking out into the Gulf of Mexico. A few weeks ago I was lucky to revisit Venice with my son, Cory, in pursuit of yellowfin tuna, marlin, wahoo, red snapper, shark, grouper, jack crevalle and many other scaled creatures of the deep.

Hundreds of oil and gas rigs span the horizon offering deep water structures which hold trophy fish, year round. These rigs provide a biosphere for migratory monsters which take refuge doing their laps around the waters of the world.
A gafftopsail catfish. Weird looking but worthy fighter on light tackle

Those rigs can be volatile as they pull up petroleum and natural gas from the ocean floor. One of the worst disasters in U.S. history took place on April 20, 2010 when the Deepwater Horizon exploded 41 miles off the Gulf Coast. Mother Nature also unleashed Hurricane Katrina in late August of 2005 which took the lives of 1,800 people.
Heading out of the channel from Venice to the Gulf

We fished both offshore with Captain Hunter Caballero on his 42- foot, high performance catamaran and inshore with Captain Red Frenette. These skippers are the absolute top in a group of world-class fishing guides and all around good people that you will find in Venice. If you are looking for the fishing trip of a lifetime, head to Venice, Louisiana.

I shouted for Capt. Dan and Forrest but they didn’t answer

Oh, one other memory from this trip. Look closely at the home port of the shrimp boat in the photograph.

Bayou La Batre is located along the Mississippi Sound, on the Gulf of Mexico, in Mobile County, Alabama, known as the Seafood Capital of Alabama. It is mentioned in the 1994 classic Forrest Gump. The shrimper was at the home of Forrest’s army buddy Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue, and later Mr. Forrest Gump himself during his time as a shrimp boat captain.

Retirement of a Legend
A Salute to Joe Starkey
by Robert Moselle, Esq.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Starkey recently announced that he will retire after the 2022 season of Cal Bears football.

It has been the Bay Area's extreme good fortune to have had Joe Starkey here to add excitement to every event he called with his verve, attention to detail, encyclopedic knowledge, and stories only someone with an insider's view has.

I had the privilege to work with Joe on a project outside of his regular duties in the announcer's booth, although it did involve a television studio. Joe agreed to conduct an interview with San Francisco sports attorney Steve Baker, of Baker Sports Management. A colleague of mine, who knew Joe, and I met with him and his friend, Dr. Harry Edwards, at a restaurant in the East Bay.

As we sat down, I realized I was at a table with Bay Area Sports Royalty, and how that company was so friendly, enjoyable and packed with wisdom! The program, a one-hour seminar, Sports Law: Rules of the Game, doubled as a television pilot and Continuing Legal Education program and was filmed at a local production house.

Joe's preparation, intense focus and grasp of the issues were matched by his professionalism in the studio. It was an extraordinary experience to watch a natural at work. A brief clip (7:05) from the program may be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krHvmWE3VlQ&list=PLi_6NBoVwFxg6l5Y2looJinIgnD7iTxoe&index=49

One little known fact Joe mentioned at our lunch, and which I have not read in any of the retirement announcements, was that Joe was once on Jeopardy! Although he did not win, (and a band did not run onto the field), it demonstrates the wide range of knowledge of this true Renaissance Man.

Watch for a great season by the Cal Bears who will undoubtedly play with extra ferocity for their own 12th man. Of course, no tribute to Joe Starkey would be complete without a link to the greatest call in the history of college sports: The Play. Enjoy it, and Thank You, Joe! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfebpLfAt8g

For more on Joe Starkey's storied career in sports, here is a link to a recent interview in SFGate:

San Francisco 49ers
I don’t know what to say about the Thursday Night 49ers Game
by Howard Pearlstein

Well, actually I do, but the problem is they’re all unprintable (#~!##xz&&). The players also have to be disappointed and embarrassed after that game, because they know they can do better. Coach Shanahan said he was going to stick to plain vanilla (so as not to give anything away to other teams).

Well, more like imitation vanilla flavoring. Vanilla is the most chemically complex of all the popular flavors and imitation Vanillin is a cheap substitute made from any variety of things, such as wood waste from the paper making process, coal tar, clove oil, pine bark, or fermented bran.

Trey Lance was more like a pair of Treys in a high stakes poker game.

Sudfeld – well, neither Nate Sudfeld nor Brock Purdy had much of an O-line so wottehell, boss, who knows? Admittedly, I find myself favoring Purdy in general, because of some things that remind me of the 49er Glory Days, but both he and Sudfeld were a loss to put a game together.

Last exhibition game is supposed to trot out a good preview of the coming season.

Please make it not be so.

I was fearing that getting rid of Purdy might be something to regret, what he may become with more experience. But now I’m afraid that getting rid of Jimmy Garoppolo instead of trying to do a classic 49er Carmen Policy move and renegotiate his contract as a backup is a fail that might bite behinds in days to come.

Finally, as a longtime 49er Faithful, after watching a game, sitting comfortably at home with a couple of good friends, drinking Berkeley’s own Pilsner (Trumer Pils) and munching on chips and such, I always think of the players, because they’re the people we cheer for, and there they were, putting it all out there in public and having to fly home after having been totally unprepared for the game, because for them, it was as real as the Marines’ retreat from the Chosin Reservoir in 1953 --- too much pain going on for too long.

The only saving grace for those of us who love the red & gold is at least our fans didn’t have to pay for tickets to attend.

Go 9ers. You’ve got all the pieces, so near and yet so far.

San Jose State Spartans
San José State to Support Student-Athletes through Alston Ruling

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Director of Athletics Jeff Konya announced on Friday that San José State Athletics will launch new support for its student-athletes through the Alston Ruling, allowing athletic departments to add academic achievement awards to eligible student-athletes. The Spartans are one of the first Mountain West members to provide this additional support.

"We recognized that this would be a great opportunity to provide this benefit to our student-athletes," said Konya. "I want to thank our leadership team for developing a program to help facilitate this for our Spartans, as well as the donors that are making it a priority to provide additional funds to help secure a cutting-edge experience for our student-athletes. I also would like to thank Steve Coates for his major gift in this space."

All scholarship athletes will have the opportunity to earn the Alston award through extensive participation with the Beyond Sparta program. In addition, individual sport programs may provide further payments based on objective academic criteria.

"We wanted to be creative and innovative in how we were going to provide this opportunity to our student-athletes knowing that it would be one of the few of its kind in the Mountain West," said Laura Alexander, Senior Associate AD for Student Wellness and Leadership Development. "Our athletics department values the development of our student-athletes beyond their participation in sport which is why we decided to directly link Alston money earnings to their participation in Beyond Sparta/Professional Development programming, in hopes that we can encourage them to set themselves up for success not only on the field, but off the field."

What they are saying ...
Brent Brennan, head football coach
"We are excited about the vision of our leadership team to add this incredible opportunity for our players. This support is another positive investment in all of our student-athletes and helps San José State become a destination for top prospects."

Dana Dormann, head women's golf coach
"The Alston money our student-athletes will receive allows them more freedom to be giving and productive members in our community. In addition, this money will allow us to attract the highest level recruits who are able to receive Alston money from our competitors. We have had some fantastic results in the classroom and this is a really impactful way to recognize their hard work."

Tim Miles, head men's basketball coach
"The prospect for our student-athletes to receive Alston funds is a great opportunity. It's a win-win for everyone involved. Donors can provide a tax-deductible gift that directly helps the students and our players can improve themselves academically and financially while improving their life skills."

April Phillips, head women's basketball coach
"The Alston award truly improves and impacts the experience our student-athletes will have here at San José State. It's indicative of the direction and leadership of our athletics department and university and their commitment to gaining competitive advantages in the Mountain West."

Saint Mary's College Gaels
Tommy Kuhse Agrees to Contract with Spurs

SAN ANTONIO — Another former Saint Mary's Gael is joining the NBA. According to sources familiar with the league, recent Saint Mary's graduate Tommy Kuhse has agreed to a contact with the San Antonio Spurs.

Kuhse drew the attention of teams around the league with his performance in the Las Vegas Summer League in July, where he played with the Orlando Magic. He played in three games for the Magic, and averaged 17.3 points per game on 58.3% shooting from the field, averaging 23.2 minutes per game. His breakout performance came against the New York Knicks on July 14 when he exploded for 25 points.

Breaking out into a leading role on the Gaels over his final two seasons, Kuhse capped off his Saint Mary's career by being named the West Coast Conference's Sixth Man of the Year, in addition to First Team All-WCC honors. He joined the 1,000-point club at Saint Mary's at finishes his career 26th overall in points scored (1,138), fifth in assists (477), ninth in steals (119), and as the program's all-time leader in games played (149).

His performance on the court continued to rise throughout his collegiate career, culminating in his final two seasons, where he averaged 12.4 points per game over his final 58 games. He maintained his excellence in the classroom simultaneously, continuing to lock up WCC All-Academic honors during his final three seasons.

Details of the contract have not been announced. Per hoopsrumors.com, it is expected that his contract is a non-guaranteed deal that could possibly include Exhibit 10 language, which would pave the way for him to earn a potential two-way contract. The Spurs roster is full with 18 players officially under contract.

If Kuhse were to make the Spurs NBA roster at some point during the season, he would be the fifth Gael actively in the NBA. Patty Mills is the longest-tenured Gael in the NBA, actively under contract in a starting role with the Brooklyn Nets. Jock Landale was traded twice during the offseason and landed on the Phoenix Suns after the second trade. Matthew Dellavedova got back into the NBA this season when he signed a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings. Malik Fitts was with the Boston Celtics last season and played in the NBA Finals, but is currently a free agent after he was waived by the Indiana Pacers.

USF Tops Grand Canyon to Win Bobcat Classic

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Returning to the court following their double header sweep yesterday, the USF Dons volleyball team (3-0) wrapped up a great weekend on the Great Plains by defeating the Grand Canyon Antelopes (2-1) by a 3-1 final score to win the 2022 Bobcat Classic hosted by Montana State.

The Dons carried the momentum from yesterday's wins over Montana State and St. Thomas to defeat the previously unbeaten Antelopes in four sets to bring the trophy home to the Hilltop. Maria Petkova was named MVP of the Bobcat Classic as well as being selected to the All-Tournament alongside teammate Abby Wadas

  • IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Both teams came to play in the first set with neither team able to build much separation as both sides were tied at 16 late in the set. The Dons were able to pull away late in the set thanks in part to key kills from Claire Crijns and Petkova to take the 25-23 victory.
  • GCU was able to even the match in the second set as they took an early advantage on their way to the 25-17 set win.
  • Knowing the importance of the third set, each side took turns accumulating points as the set was tied 11-all midway through. Late in the set tied at 21, the Dons were able to pull away by winning four of the last five points as they took the set by a 25-22 score thanks to a key kill and block by Orsula Staka.
  • After taking control of the match the Dons were ready to flex their muscles on their way to the victory as they raced out to an early 11-4 lead thanks to key plays from Crijns, Staka, Petkova and Shyia Richardson. USF was able to stave off a late rally attempt by the Antelopes as they took the final four points of the match to win in three sets by a 25-14 score in the fourth set.
  • NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Petkova capped off her MVP weekend by leading both teams with 15 kills as she accumulated a double-double with 11 digs and two aces for USF in the victory.
  • Crijns has made an instant impact for the Dons' front court in her first three matches for USF as she was key in Saturday's win with a team-high five blocks to go along with 10 kills and three aces.
  • Wadas has continued to be a welcome edition to USF's defense as she was named to the All-Tournament team following her nine digs and six assist performance against the Antelopes.
  • Richardson was able to do a little bit of everything to help lead the Dons to the victory by posting nine kills, seven digs and an ace for USF.

CATCHING UP WITH COACH SILVA:
"It was a great tournament to start the season. We're happy to win and to win with this group because they deserve it. We should celebrate today and tomorrow start thinking about the next weekend. We focus on the process to improve everyday, make good decisions and consistently work hard. Let's go Dons!"

UP NEXT:
The Dons now look ahead to another weekend tournament as they will travel south for the Fresno State Invitational next weekend. USF will face off against the Seattle University Redhawks, Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the host Fresno State Bulldogs in their return to the court next Friday and Saturday. Live streaming and live statistics will be available via the team's schedule page

Broncos Win Game Two Of Foreign Tour, 65-57

BARCELONA, Spain - Santa Clara men's basketball improved to 2-0 on their foreign tour on Friday after defeating their opponent (who has asked to remain anonymous) by a final of 65-57.

Before lacing up their sneakers, the Broncos took in the sights of beautiful downtown Barcelona, visiting the world famous la Sagrada Famila, the largest unfinished Roman Catholic Church in the world.

Once the tour was over, Santa Clara turned their attention to the hardwood and played a very consistent 40 minutes of basketball. The Broncos scored the first six points of the night and never looked back, only losing the lead briefly in the second quarter. Led by 11 first half points from sophomore Brandin Podziemski, SCU took a 38-36 lead into the locker room. The Broncos then played even better in the third and fourth quarters, building a 16-point lead inside the final seven minutes of the game. Podziemski finished the game as the team's leading scorer for the second-straight game, securing 19 points in the winning effort. Senior Jaden Bediako scored 12 points as the only other Bronco to reach the double-digit scoring plateau. In total, 9-of-10 players that saw the court for SCU put their name on the scoring sheet. Freshman Kosy Akametu scored nine points while senior Parker Braun secured seven points.

The most impressive stat of the night was the rebounding margin in which the Broncos dominated with a 56-33 advantage. That includes a 22-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

Santa Clara is now off for Paris where they will have a couple of days to recover before taking on Paris Basketball in their final game of the foreign tour.

Quakes return home to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC
on Sept. 4

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Sporting Kansas City 1-0 on Saturday evening at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

Sporting Kansas City got on the board in the 10th minute. A blocked cross fell to Daniel Salloi inside the penalty area and his low shot beat goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski at the far post.

The two sides traded goal-scoring opportunities for the remainder of the match, with both teams having a goal disallowed due to offsides just minutes apart early in the second half. Ultimately, neither team were able to score again before the final whistle.

The Earthquakes will now return to San Jose to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday, Sept. 4, presented by Mindstrong. The match will kick off from PayPal Park at 6:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO
On tonight’s performance and how the young players took advantage of their opportunities:
“My conclusions are very clear; I think the team tried to win the game. We had an opportunity from Cristian Espinoza, Jeremy [Ebobisse] had an opportunity, a set piece was another one and then we had another from Cade [Cowell] where Jebo [Jeremy Ebobisse] couldn’t get to it. It was an interesting game and I believe we did all we could do to win the game. I have no regrets from the players because they tried and right now, we need to analyze it and Monday start again. With relation to the young players, Cade [Cowell] had a very good game last time which is why he came in. He did a good job and almost had an assist to Jebo [Jeremy Ebobisse]. With Niko [Tsakiris], I don’t care if he is 17 years old or 35 years old, we needed the attack and two players in front of Jackson [Yueill] in order to be more offensive.”

On if the team can become more counter-attack oriented:
“We knew that we would come here to the heat in Kansas. Sporting Kansas City is not the same team that we faced at home. We tried to start our line of confrontation a little bit lower and even then, they found spaces to overload our left side, and right side. At times they had a 3-v-1 against Tommy [Thompson] and that’s why at halftime we regrouped to make sure the team was compact. The idea was to be more solid in the middle and wait for our opportunities, and we all tried to attack. We need to understand when to apply pressure high and when to drop with our line of confrontation a little bit lower in terms of the game plan.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER JT MARCINKOWSKI
On the match and Sporting’s game plan:
“I can’t say much about their tactics, but they had a clear idea about how they wanted to play and I thought they played well throughout the match. I also think we had a spell of moments that created a few chances and we should have created a few more. Defensively, I did have a few saves but it’s not like they were that tough or clear-cut opportunities. In general, I thought our backline played really well. I think we started a little slow and that trickled into the rest of the first half. The second half was kind of the same. We started a bit slow and found our feet and got going. Just couldn’t find one.”

On the frustration of not getting at least a point:
“At this point in the season, anything besides three points is really frustrating. We obviously know that we only have seven games left now. I think this was a big opportunity tonight but then there’s another one next Sunday against Vancouver. We’ll watch some film and recoup and recover and figure some things out that need to be better in the first half and early in the second half, and also highlight the positives that we had throughout the match today. Sporting is always a tough team to play away and I think they’re a much different team now than earlier in the season with new signings and finding their rhythm. Overall, proud of the guys and proud to be a part of this team and we’ll continue to fight until we can’t anymore.”

Roots Fall After Six Unbeaten Against
Sacramento Republic

Sacramento came out on the front foot early but were unable to find the back of the net within the first 15 minutes while controlling much of the run of play. Then in the 21st minute from a corner kick Sacramento took the lead through a Connor Donovan header to make the game 1-0 in favor of the hosts. Oakland battled back with their best chance of the half coming late on when Mikael fired a strike that Sacramento keeper Danny Vitiello spilled leaving a second chance for Oakland’s Darek Formella that he was just unable to finish as the half ended 1-0.

Oakland came out of the locker room stronger with more possession but were unable to create a major chance in that time. Sacramento then threatened in the 66th minute when a rebound hit the post before Paul Blanchette made a big save to keep Oakland in the match. Oakland then began to press high and made some attacking substitutions as some chances started to fall the way of the visitors. In the end Roots were unable to find the equalizer as Republic won their first ever match over Oakland.

Oakland Roots are back in action next Saturday at home at Laney College as they host San Antonio on September 3rd at 7:00 PM.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Returns with Panache as 24 Hours of Le Mans Celebration Wows the Crowds

An amazing selection of 24 Hours of Le Mans winners and specials gathered for the traditional group photo.

MONTEREY, Calif., August 24, 2022 – Enthusiasm ran at full throttle as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion celebrated motorsport history with 400-plus incredible historic race cars, large enthusiastic crowds and a tribute to the 24 Hours of Le Mans to kick off its yearlong centennial. From the moment guests arrived at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and drove by the large Le Mans sign, the stage was set for the enhancements created for a new welcoming and friendly experience.

“We are very pleased by the initial feedback to the new Wednesday through Saturday format, activities and features put in place, the car selection and driver camaraderie, and ticket sales,” said John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “I want to also thank our County of Monterey supervisors who participated to see just how important the Rolex Reunion is among the motoring world.”

Advance ticket sales surpassed 2021 by 92 percent and exceeded the pre-pandemic 2019 event by 11 percent. “We are still auditing admission sales, but it was very encouraging to see so many people purchasing tickets as they entered. Our admissions team of volunteers and service clubs did an incredible job at quickly processing purchases to minimize wait times,” Narigi added.

Saturday was action-packed from the moment the green flag waved. The Picnic in the Paddock hosted an impressive lineup of Le Mans legends to share stories before an appreciative standing-room-only audience. Attending were Grand Marshal and nine time Le Mans overall winner Tom Kristensen, six-time overall winner Jacky Ickx, four-time overall winner Henri Pescarolo, one-time overall and two-time class winner Stefan Johansson, overall winner Jochen Mass, two-time class winners John Morton and Ron Fellows, Shelby Daytona Cobra designer Peter Brock, and the President of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest Pierre Fillon. The session was hosted by automotive historian Murray Smith.

An autograph session followed and included additional Le Mans dignitaries Lyn St. James, Bob Garretson, Margie Smith-Haas, Scott Atherton, Rick Knoop, Dominic Dobson, and Allen Berg who signed autographs well past the designated time.

The Le Mans Legends Heritage Display, presented by Motul, was a daily hub of activity from dawn to dusk. Inside were 51 Le Mans-winning cars and selected specials. From the 1929 and 1930 overall winning Bentley Speed Six, and two Ferrari 250 GTOs, to the 1967 winning Ford Mk IV and 2005 Audi R8, the collection provided a remarkable evolution of motorsport history.

Among the popular new activities were the Café Le Mans where guests enjoyed Moet Champagne, lining up along the new pre-grid for the Le Mans style start, where drivers ran across to jump into their cars for the start, to the Hagerty Marketplace where families enjoyed racing go-karts, visiting vendors and taking a ride on the Ferris wheel. There were also two movie nights, bustling car corrals, and viewing from nearly every area on the track.

Prizes are presented to individuals based on exceptional performance in their race groups, not based on race results, and are selected by stewards.

“The first-ever Corkscrew Hillclimb and Community Day was a resounding success and attracted many of our area residents for the first time,” Narigi said. “It really was a fun, relaxed day that provided a new form of entertainment for drivers and fans who could enjoy their experience at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area. We learned a lot and will definitely expand upon the Corkscrew Hillclimb and Community Day for 2023.”

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.
